“An avalanche: It’s a real force to be reckoned with…”
Pro snowboarder Travis Rice came up with that understatement of the century after a terrifying incident in Valdez, Alaska.
Rice and fellow boarder Victor De La Rue took on frightening slopes in their extreme series ‘The Fourth Phase’ and ended up tackling a crazy cliff face.
De La Rue went first, and his run was scary enough but without incident. Next came Rice, and he wasn’t so fortunate.
The 34-year-old American found himself taken out by a sudden and potentially devastating avalanche which left him buried in snow.
Very fortunately, Rice made a lucky escape with just a few ribs displaced and was left to reflect on the fact that he “underestimated how much snow was on that face”.
Thankfully, he is still around and now able to warn of the dangers of avalanches and encourage fellow boarders to ‘Know Before You Go’.
