Serena Williams has told her fans that she suffered complications during the birth of her baby that kept her in hospital for six or seven days, before revealing the first pictures of her daughter.

The 23-time Grand Slam winner does not reveal what the problems were in a video on YouTube, which features footage and pictures from the nine months leading up to the birth.

However, she is clearly in a jubilant mood as she reveals the baby. ‘Look what we got! A baby girl’ she says.

The 35-year-old then reveals the baby’s name and jests about her tennis pedigree in a message that flashes up: “Hello, world. Baby girl Alexis Olympia Ohanian, Jr. Born: September 1, 2017. Weight: 6 lb 14 oz. Grand slam titles: 1.”

The baby is named after her father Alexis Ohanian, the founder of Reddit, who also features in the video, and the Grand Slam titles remark is a reference to Williams winning the Australian Open title in January while eight weeks pregnant.

At the US Open, her coach, Patrick Mouratoglou revealed that Williams is hoping to return to tennis at the Australian Open.
