Football fans rarely unite, but there seems unanimous agreement that FIFA’s trials of the VAR have been an absolute shambles.

The latest example came in Germany’s Confederations Cup game against Cameroon in Sochi.

Referee Wilmar Roldan referred a challenge by Cameroon’s Ernest Mabouka (number 2, as the replay clearly shows) to the video ref – and when the decision came back he showed a red card to Sebastien Siani (number 15).

After moments of confusion the card was eventually show to the right player… but was it even a sending off? VAR arguably got two calls wrong in the same incident – and Twitter went off.

The frustrating thing is that video technology can work – and does in countless other sports – but its application in football has been abysmal.
