Antonio Conte’s dismissal at Chelsea surprised nobody. It was on the cards long before last season’s FA Cup triumph, which came less than 12 months after he won the Premier League.

Two trophies in two seasons but the writing was on the wall. Failing to land a top-four spot and finishing 30 points behind champions Manchester City was never going to sit well with the hierarchy at Stamford Bridge. That, and criticising the club’s transfer policy earlier in the season – it was always going to come to a pretty sour end.

But even so, Chelsea’s announcement on Friday was quite something…

During Antonio’s time at the club, we won our sixth league title and eighth FA Cup. In the title winning season, the club set a then-record 30 wins in a 38-game Premier League season, as well as a club-record 13 consecutive league victories. We wish Antonio every success in his future career.

That was it. That is all Chelsea had to say. And people are not happy.

The exuberant, passionate and, at times, bonkers Italian was popular among many Chelsea fans and there was lots of support for him after his tenure finally came to an end.
