Sensational rumours swept across social media on Wednesday ahead of England’s World Cup squad announcement, claiming Bayer Leverkusen forward Leon Bailey was primed for a shock call-up.

The Jamaican-born winger, 20, has lit up the Bundesliga this season, while it was reported in March that his father was set for talks with the Football Association.

Bailey hoped he was eligible for England via two grandparents who have English passports, but his dreams were snuffed out after being left out Gareth Southgate’s squad for Russia.

While we were highly sceptical at LeBuzz, we were also rather excited at the idea – especially after betting was suspended on it.

Bailey fuelled the rumours by posting an Instagram post on Wednesday afternoon with the caption “humble lion” – perhaps a less-than-subtle reference to the Three Lions.

Humble Lion.

His Wikipedia got a brilliant update:

And while it didn’t happen, England fans at least had something to get them excited…

Sadly, there were people out to burst the balloon:

And, sadly, their cynicism was proved correct.
