This quite extraordinary piece of film showing a group of skiers first being buried by an avalanche, and subsequently rescued, is over five minutes long.

That’s a lot for an internet video – but it’s worth watching every second.

The footage was shared by James Mort, who was skiing with friends in Les Crosets, Switerzland, when he was caught up in an avalanche. Buried alive, he thought he would never see daylight again – but thankfully, his friends managed to rescue him.

James tells the whole story on his Tumblr page, and it adds an extraordinary perspective to the video – shot by Daniel O’Sullivan – in which the race to find him beneath five feet of snow is tense and gripping to the point of being unbearable, even when you know the outcome.
