The USA men’s national team will not be at the 2018 World Cup.

Tuesday’s loss to Trinidad and Tobago confirmed the American team’s fate, with Honduras pipping them to the play-off spot and Panama joining Costa Rica and Mexico as automatic qualifiers.

It’s a crushing disappointment for a growing power in the game, and American fans struggled to come to terms with the scale of the disappointment.

Quickly the conversation turned to systematic failings in the soccer system in the country, echoing conversations that have been had in many other countries in the past.

Christian Pulisic was the only player to escape criticism.

And the fact it was a country the size of Trinidad and Tobago who knocked out the north American giants didn’t go unmentioned.

But given the recent dispute over pay, it was little surprise that the conversation quickly turned to the differing performances of the men’s and women’s national teams.
