Benfica v Manchester United was settled by a bizarre mistake.
18-year-old goalkeeping prospect Mile Svilar had enjoyed an impressive night prior to the 64th minute.
But he got his positioning all wrong for a deep free-kick from Marcus Rashford…
Then opted to catch rather than punch…
And ended up back-peddling the ball into his own net.
It was a calamity!

The 18-year-old goalkeeper far off his line, and Rashford looks to catch him, Svilar catching it bit then bringing it over his own line.

That’s actually a cracking goal from Rashford. He’s spotted the keeper’s weakness and taken advantage

Weird goal too, Rashford's free kick floating over the keeper who caught it but took it behind the line as he came down. 1-0 United.

The mistake ended up costing Benfica the game
But Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku did something remarkable at full-time, immediately going up to the youngster (who plays for the Belgium youth teams and is tipped for the top) to console his compatriot.

Top class from Lukaku. Goes up to the 17 year old Benfica keeper after and hugs him & gives him a talking to following his mistake.

Lukaku consoling and advising the Benfica keeper is a wonderful moment – no success stories without failure along the way

That’s wonderful from Lukaku.
