It doesn’t get much more heartbreaking than this for the Republic of Ireland in the U17 Euros.

Facing Netherlands in the quarter-final, and following a 1-1 draw, the match headed to a penalty shootout.

It was 4-4 when Jimmy Corcoran saved Iwan Redan’s potentially match-winning penalty, but having come off his line to do so, and after being booked earlier in the game, the referee gave Corcoran his marching orders and had the spot-kick retaken.

Redan went on to score the penalty and send Netherlands into the semi-finals, while the above video shows the agonising moment Corcoran was shown a second yellow.

Among those in disbelief – former England midfielder Peter Reid.

Short and sweet from Peter, but it’s hard to argue with him.
